A source with direct knowledge told Reuters on Monday that China Jiaotong (601800.SS) is preparing to bid for a Brazilian bridge project worth 5.3 billion reals ($1.42 billion).
Sources said that China Jiaotong Construction is negotiating a joint tender with a subsidiary of China Railway Construction (601186. SS), but whether to bid or not and whether to bid jointly have not been finalized.
The project involves the construction and operation of a bridge connecting El Salvador, capital of Bahia, and Vera Cruz, capital of Itaparica.
Valor Economico, Brazil's local newspaper, first reported on Chinese companies'interest in the project Monday. The Chinese enterprises did not respond immediately to the request for comment.
The bridge length of 12.4 kilometers (7.7 miles), Brazil is a part of the economic stimulus plan, the infrastructure is Itaparica Island needed, the island is a resident of Salvatore weekend beach resort. At present, the main city from Salvatore to Itaparica island of Vera Cruz, only a ferry ride or drive four hours between the two Bay City bypass.
This project is still in the stage of public consultation, yet tender.
