      The U.S. military said Friday that the United States and South Korea decided to suspend joint air defense exercises scheduled for December, creating "every opportunity to move forward" in diplomatic efforts to resolve the North Korean issue.
The U.S. Defense Department said James Mattis, the U.S. Defense Secretary, and South Korea's Defense Secretary, Jung Jingdou, met in Singapore on Friday and the two decided to suspend the "trump card" joint air force exercise.
In a statement, Defense Department spokesman Dana White said the decision was "to create every opportunity for the diplomatic process to continue".
She also said that Matisse had also communicated with the Japanese defense minister on this issue.
