The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said a 7.6-magnitude undersea earthquake hit the eastern coast of New Caledonia in the South Pacific on Wednesday. The center warned of possible severe tsunamis in nearby areas.
The depth of the undersea earthquake was very shallow, only 10 kilometers, and the epicenter was about 155 kilometers east-southeast of the Loyalty Islands off the east coast of New Caledonia.
"Within 1,000 kilometers of the epicenter, dangerous tsunamis may occur along the coasts of Vanuatu and New Caledonia." Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.
