Nigerian President Mohamed Buhari won the second term of office of Africa's largest economy and oil-producing country after delays, logistical failures and violence, the election committee chairman said Wednesday.
He defeated his main opposition candidate, Atiku Abubakar, a businessman and former vice president. Buhari received 56% of the vote, while Atiku, the candidate of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), received 41% of the vote.
Bukhari faces a daunting list of things to do, including restoring an economy still struggling to recover from the recession of 2016 and a decade-long Islamic insurgency that has killed thousands of people in the northeast, many of them civilians.
