U.S. President Trump said Wednesday that trade negotiations with Beijing are progressing smoothly and that U.S. negotiators will go to China next week for more talks. At present, China and the United States are conducting consultations to try to reach an agreement to end trade disputes.
The United States and China impose tariffs on each other's products worth hundreds of billions of dollars. The eight-month trade war between the world's two largest economies has raised costs, stirred financial markets, lowered U.S. agricultural exports and disrupted manufacturing supply chains.
"The agreement negotiations are progressing smoothly," Trump told reporters at the White House, adding that senior U.S. negotiators will travel to China this weekend to "further promote the agreement."
Asked about the abolition of tariffs on China, Trump said: "We are not talking about abolishing tariffs. We are discussing tariff retention measures for quite a long time, because we have to make sure that if we reach an agreement, "China will abide by the agreement. But he did not elaborate.
Later, in a speech in Lima, Ohio, Trump reiterated his hope for a "great" trade agreement between the United States and China.
