Senior U.S. trade officials call Europe and the United States

      Clete Willems, a senior U.S. trade official, said Monday that EU leaders had not shown the seriousness they deserved when dealing with issues related to China's trade policy in the past, but now the United States and the European Union are "working together" in the World Trade Organization (WTO) on China's non-market economy policy.
In a speech delivered by the American Chamber of Commerce, Willems said the United States and the European Union wanted to work together on joint projects to provide market-based alternatives to state-led "conditional" initiatives.
This month, China will host the second summit of its "one belt and one road initiative". The initiative envisages linking China with Asia, Europe and other regions through large-scale infrastructure investment, but the United States will not send senior officials to the summit.
The United States regards China as its main strategic opponent. The United States has said it sees the initiative as a way for China to expand its influence overseas and use opaque projects to burden low-income countries with unsustainable debt burdens.
Willems said the United States and the European Union have made progress in soybean trade negotiations. He also said that Washington and Brussels were also discussing the construction of LNG terminals and infrastructure.
