U.S. President Trump has ordered a restructuring of the leadership of the Department of Homeland Security, the U.S. Secret Service chief said Monday. Prior to that, the White House had said that the Secret Service Director was leaving.
The Secret Service said Randolph Alles, the director, would leave office next month. The day before, Alice's boss, U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, was also replaced by Trump because they had a conflict over immigration.
"You have undoubtedly seen media reports about my dismissal. I can assure you that things are not as reported. In fact, the whole Homeland Security leadership has been told weeks ago that changes are expected, "Alas said in a message to Secret Service agents.
Neither Trump nor the White House had explained the cause of the massive earthquake at the top of the Department of Homeland Security, but the President had heard of the recent surge in immigration from Central America. Immigration and border security are overseen by the Department of Homeland Security.
White House spokesman Thomas Sanders said James Murray, who has a career as a Secret Service agent, would take over as director in May.
