China imported more soybeans from the United States than in the previous month because more shipments were scheduled to arrive in China during the truce of the trade dispute between the two countries. The United States is China's second largest soybean supplier in 2018.
China is the world's largest importer of soybeans. Data released Thursday by the General Administration of Customs show that China imported 1.51 million tons of soybeans from the United States in March, up from February.
However, as the high tariffs imposed by the Chinese government on U.S. goods still exist and imports are restricted, imports in March were only half of those in the same period last year.
Customs data show that China also imported 2.79 million tons of soybeans from Brazil, the largest soybean supplier, up from 2.33 million tons in March 2018.
According to customs data released earlier this month, China imported 4.92 million tons of soybeans in March.
Imports from Canada jumped from 70,997 tons a year ago to 205,776 tons.
China is the world's largest oil-seed importer and usually buys soybeans from the United States in the fourth quarter of each year and in the first few months of the year when the U.S. soybean harvest dominates the market.
