Huawei’s chief financial officer, Meng Xizhou, sought to suspend the extradition process, partly based on US President Trump’s comments on the case. Ms. Meng’s lawyer said that Trump’s remarks made the United States ineligible to advance the extradition process in Canada.
Meng Zaizhou, 47, is the daughter of Huawei’s founder Ren Zhengfei. He was arrested at the Vancouver airport in December last year for his request. He is currently boycotting the US extradition request based on fraud charges. The allegations alleged that she made a misleading statement to Huawei on the relationship between Huawei and a company operating in Iran.
Meng Zhouzhou’s defense lawyer said in a document that she was illegally detained in Canada and that there was no evidence that she misjudged a bank’s relationship with the Iranian company Skycom, causing the bank to violate the US sanctions law. The risk, and there is no evidence that the bank made a judgment based on her statement.
The bank is alleged to be HSBC Holdings (HSBA.L). HSBC did not immediately respond to the request for comment.
Huawei previously said that Skycom is a local business partner of Iran, while the United States insists that it is an informal subsidiary of Huawei to cover Huawei's Iranian business.
Meng Fuzhou’s defense attorney, Scott Fenton, told the court that her rights were “completely deprived” during the three hours of detention in June.
Lawyers also claimed that they could not extradite Meng Zhouzhou because Canada should not extradite a person for punishment because it is not a crime in Canada.
