Government data released Wednesday showed that China's average daily crude oil processing rose to a record high in April, thanks to increased production by private refineries, including the opening of a new large refinery in the Northeast.
Data from the National Bureau of Statistics show that crude oil processing increased by 5% in April compared with the same period last year, reaching 52.1 million tons, averaging 12.68 million barrels per day, a daily record high earlier this year.
The new refinery with a processing capacity of 400,000 barrels per day in Northeast China was put into trial operation about five months ago and is expected to reach full production later this month.
"The processing capacity of Hengli and.... Teapot refineries has increased substantially," said Wang Zhao, head of crude oil research at Zhuochuang Information. Independent refineries in China are often referred to as "teapot refineries".
Wang said that the resumption of production after refinery maintenance was also one of the reasons for the increase in crude oil processing in April.
