Google, owned by Alphabet (GOOGL.O), warned of the risk of national security damage if the U.S. government continued to push for an expansion of the ban on Huawei Technologies Ltd., the Financial Times reported on Thursday.
The sanctions are expected to hurt Huawei in the short term, but industry insiders say it may force Huawei -- and other Chinese companies -- to become self-reliant by developing more proprietary technologies, which in the long run will undermine the dominance of American companies such as Google.
The Financial Times quoted people familiar with Google's lobbying campaign as saying that Google was particularly concerned about not updating Huawei's Android operating system for smartphones, saying it would encourage Huawei to develop its own software.
According to the report, Google said that Huawei's modified Android operating system was more vulnerable to attack.
Google and the U.S. Department of Commerce could not be reached for comment on the report.
