In the inflation analysis report, the global chief economist of UBS (UBSG.S) has scornfully referred to the wording of "China pig", which has caused outrage in China. Some financial circles have refused the apology of the company and called for the boycott of UBS.
Paul Donovan has been chief economist at UBS Global Wealth Management since 2016. He said in podcasting that the rise in Chinese consumer prices is due to hog cholera, which is related to Chinese pigs.
"Does it matter? If you are a Chinese pig, it will matter if you like eating pork in China, "he said on Wednesday's audio. The audio text was posted on UBS's official website and was subsequently withdrawn.
His comments caused a stir among Chinese financial professionals, calling them "unpleasant and racially discriminatory".
This has even attracted the attention of the influential official Chinese media, Global Times, which said the wording in the consumer price analysis angered Chinese Internet users.
"We unreservedly apologize for any misunderstanding caused by Paul Donovan's unintentional comments," UBS said in an e-mail statement to Reuters.
"We have deleted the relevant audio comments. It needs to be clear that this comment is about inflation caused by rising pork prices and rising consumer prices in China.
