The Wall Street Journal on Sunday quoted people familiar with the situation as saying that US President Trump plans to require the next generation of 5G mobile communication devices to be designed and manufactured outside China for use in the United States.
According to the Wall Street Journal, as part of a 150-day review of U.S. cyber security concerns, officials are asking telecom equipment manufacturers whether they can develop hardware and software for use in the United States outside China, including cellular tower electronics, routers and switches.
In May, the Trump government banned Huawei from purchasing important U.S. technology without special approval, citing national security. This effectively excluded Huawei equipment from the U.S. telecommunications network.
According to the Wall Street Journal, discussions are still in an informal stage, and any executive order requires only a list of rules and regulations to be submitted before the expiry of October within 150 days, so any decision may take years.
