A senior U.S. official said Monday that President Trump viewed this week's meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping as an opportunity to understand China's position on the bilateral trade war and "is willing to accept any outcome of the meeting".
The special meeting during the Osaka Summit of the Group of 20 (G20) has attracted much attention. It was the first meeting between the two sides since November last year and the first face-to-face consultation between the leaders of the two countries since the collapse of the U.S. -China trade negotiations in May.
The U.S. government official, who asked for anonymity, only said that the special session would be held on the second day of the Osaka summit, but did not disclose any details of the meeting plan.
"For the President, this is really just an opportunity to keep in close contact with Xi Jinping. Even if trade frictions continue, he has an opportunity to understand China's position after the breakdown of negotiations, "the official said.
"The President can accept any outcome." The official also said.
The official declined to say whether the meeting was seen as an opportunity to restart negotiations or reach a more formal consensus.
"The president has made it very clear that he needs to see real structural reforms in China in a range of issues and areas, and that has not changed," the second official said.
"The fact that the talks failed in May did not change that ultimate goal." The official said.
Trump will meet at least eight world leaders during the summit, the official said. Trump has always preferred one-to-one talks to multilateral talks.
