The Japanese Release Association (NHK) said that the southern city of Kagoshima on Wednesday required nearly 600,000 residents to evacuate to evacuation centers and other safe areas to risk landslides and other damage caused by heavy rains.
NHK said that since the end of June, rainfall in Kagoshima's Kyushu region has reached about 900 mm. Japan's Meteorological Agency predicts heavy rain will continue until Thursday.
Last July, sustained rainfall in Western Japan triggered landslides and floods, killing more than 200 people.
