The Wall Street Journal quoted sources as saying that China Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. planned to lay off workers on a large scale in the United States. At present, the Chinese telecom equipment manufacturer is in trouble because it has been blacklisted by the U.S. government.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the layoffs are expected to affect Futurewei Technologies, Huawei's U.S. R&D subsidiary, which employs about 850 employees in research laboratories across the United States.
One person told the newspaper that the number of layoffs could reach hundreds. Another person said that Huawei's Chinese employees in the United States could choose to return home and stay at the company.
Wilbur Ross, the U.S. commerce secretary, said last week that the U.S. government would issue licenses to companies seeking to sell products to Huawei without threatening national security. [nL4S24A3PO]
