California's Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom signed a law Tuesday requiring U.S. presidential candidates to publish five-year tax returns before running in California. The move was apparently aimed at President Trump.
The bill was passed in California's Democratic-controlled House and Senate earlier this month, the latest effort by Democrats to make Trump's finances public.
"These are special times in which states have a legal and moral obligation to ensure that leaders intending to compete for the presidency meet minimum standards and thereby restore public confidence," Gavin Newsom said in a statement announcing the signing of the bill.
Representatives of Trump's campaign did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the measure, which is expected to face legal challenges.
