U.S. President Trump said on Saturday that progress with China had been fairly smooth, insisting that American consumers had not paid for the import tariffs he imposed on Chinese goods, although economists said the money was paid by Americans.
"Progress with China has been quite smooth. They pay us tens of billions of dollars, they devalue their currencies and invest a lot of cash to keep the system running. So far, our consumers haven't paid half a dime -- no inflation. The Federal Reserve didn't help either!" Trump said on Twitter.
He also said that countries were demanding "real trade agreements... they didn't want to be targets of U.S. tariffs." But he did not provide evidence.
