Two senior Beijing-based sources told Reuters on Monday that China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) suspended loading Venezuelan oil in August after the recent U.S. sanctions against Venezuela.
In early August, the Trump government frozen all Venezuelan government assets in the United States, and U.S. officials increased the threat to companies doing business with Venezuela.
A spokesman for PetroChina did not immediately respond to Reuters'request for comment.
"Trump's executive order provides guidance for follow-up sanctions, which should be announced by the U.S. Treasury Department... PetroChina is concerned that the company may be hit by a second sanction," a source said.
Another source, a senior executive of a major Venezuelan oil sales company in China, said his company had been informed of the suspension of Venezuelan oil shipments.
The two sources did not want to be identified because they were not allowed to speak to the media.
