Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said Tuesday that he had authorized contacts with President Trump's government for "several months" in an effort to repair relations with the United States.
Maduro suspended diplomatic relations with the United States in January. Washington imposed sanctions on senior Venezuelan officials and state entities, intensified pressure on Maduro and ousted him.
The contacts between officials of the two countries were not confirmed until early Tuesday, when Trump told reporters at the White House that the U.S. government had been holding "fairly high-level" talks with various Venezuelan delegates, although Trump would not give details.
Maduro said he could not reveal which officials contacted the U.S. government and the details of what they discussed, but said the discussion was aimed at "normalizing relations and resolving friction between the two countries".
