[Global Network Reporter Wen Jiayue] Will Britain learn from Big Brother America to abandon the existing Iranian nuclear agreement? British Prime Minister Boris Johnson's call for a "new" Iranian nuclear agreement on September 23 raised doubts about whether London would follow Washington's example and abandon the existing agreement. But a few hours later, a spokesman for the British Prime Minister's House came to "put out the fire" and called Johnson "in support of the Joint Comprehensive Action Plan".
"Today's Russia (RT) reports that on September 23, local time, Johnson told Sky News before the general debate of the 74th United Nations General Assembly:"Whatever your objections to the old nuclear agreement with Iran, now is the time to look ahead and reach a new agreement." He also said that Britain was "trying to bring people together to ease tensions".
But RT noted that just hours after Johnson's remarks, a Downing Street 10 spokesman tried to clarify them. A spokesman for No. 10 Downing Street told Reuters that Iran has not complied with the agreement, and we need them to comply again. If there is a way to do that, we are willing to discuss possible solutions. In addition, the report mentioned that on the same day, Iranian Foreign Minister Zarif did not mention anything about the new agreement in an interview with CNN.
According to RT, Britain is one of the six countries that signed the Joint Comprehensive Action Plan (JCPOA) with Iran in 2015. In March 2018, the United States withdrew unilaterally, and so far other signatories have pledged to abide by the agreement.
Moreover, this is not the first time that Britain has followed the lead of the United States. U.S. Secretary of State Pompeo said on September 14 that Iran was the "behind the scenes" of the attack on two important oil facilities of Saudi National Oil Company, Ami. On September 23, local time, Johnson also talked about the incident, pointing his finger at Iran, saying that the behind-the-scenes of the attack was probably Tehran.
