Most U.S. Democrats want to impeach President Trump, even if that means weakening the party's chances of returning to the White House in the 2020 elections.
The poll, conducted on Monday and Tuesday, showed that the support rate for impeachment among Americans remained unchanged, at 45% since last week, but the Democratic Party's support rate for impeachment was rising. Opposition to impeachment fell by two percentage points to 39% from last week.
Of the Democrats, 79% said Trump should be impeached, an increase of 5 percentage points from the previous survey conducted on September 26-30. Only 12% of Republicans and about one-third of independents supported impeachment, almost the same as last week.
In recent weeks, support for the impeachment of Trump has risen steadily, following an anonymous U.S. intelligence official who reported that Trump had tried to put pressure on Ukraine to cooperate in investigating his political opponent, former Vice President Biden and his son.
