German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas on Monday questioned whether Huawei, the Chinese telecom equipment supplier, could participate in the development and construction of 5g networks in Germany.
MAS told reporters in Berlin that Huawei is a company that relies on the Chinese government. According to China's national security law, this means Huawei has the obligation to submit information to the Chinese government.
As a result, Germany hopes to add a reliability test to the 5g safety catalog, which previously focused on the evaluation of technical standards, MAS said.
In the reliability test, the German government will evaluate whether a company's domestic law requires it to submit information and data that should be protected, and say: "Huawei is the case."
MAS' statement is the strongest signal that Germany intends to take a tougher stance on Huawei so far, and may at least exclude Huawei from some of its 5g network projects.
Government officials confirmed last month that Germany's so-called safety catalogue foreshadowed an assessment of technology and other standards, but said it would not boycott any one supplier in order to create a level playing field for equipment suppliers.
