Chinese telecom giant Huawei is a security risk, US President trump said Wednesday. Previously, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) said it needed to ensure the next generation of 5g technology.
The US worries that 5g's dominance will give global competitors like China an edge Washington is not ready to take. Some compare this to the arms race during the cold war.
"I do think it's a security risk, a security threat." Trump said.
"I told Italy, it looks like they won't continue to do that. I've mentioned it to other countries, and they won't continue. No one I've talked to will continue to do that. " Trump said.
NATO leaders said Wednesday that NATO needs secure 5g communications.
"NATO and the allies, within their respective mandates, are committed to ensuring the security of communications, including 5g, and recognize the need to rely on secure and resilient systems," NATO said in its summit statement.
"We have declared space a NATO area of operations, recognizing the importance of space for ensuring our security and meeting security challenges while respecting international law."
