Republican trump could become the third impeached president in U.S. history this week -- the Democratic controlled house of Representatives is about to vote on charges that he pressured Ukraine to investigate political rival Biden.
Biden is a popular candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020. Trump faces two impeachment charges: abuse of power to demand that Ukraine investigate Biden, and obstruction of congressional investigations.
Trump denies wrongdoing and accuses Democrats of unfounded political motives to oust him.
The house of Representatives is likely to consider the impeachment charges on Wednesday, paving the way for a vote this week. The vote will determine whether to approve the impeachment charges and leave them to the Republican controlled Senate for trial to decide whether to let trump step down.
Democrats, who have 36 seats in the house, are expected to win the impeachment vote. A simple majority is required to vote.
Republicans, who hold 53 of the 100 Senate seats, seem likely to have the upper hand in any trial against trump. A two-thirds majority of the members present is required to remove trump.
