U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres has repeatedly expressed concerns to the U.S. government about the delay in granting visas to Russian and other officials, a U.N. spokesman said Thursday. Previously, the Russian Foreign Ministry accused Guterres of turning a blind eye to this matter.
The Russian government said the United States deliberately delayed the issuance of visas to Russian officials preparing to travel to the United Nations headquarters, saying the move could further damage Russian US relations.
Russia's foreign ministry on Wednesday accused Guterres of ignoring the US delay in issuing visas.
"For several months, the Secretary General and the legal counsel of the United Nations have repeatedly expressed their concerns and the legal position of the organization to the high representative of the host country," U.N. Secretary General spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in a statement.
Dugarik said Guterres and his team continue to pay close attention to the matter.
