In order to achieve long-term climate goals in the most cost-effective way, China must stop building new thermal power plants, according to a study involving a government backed Research Institute.
China is rigorously assessing its energy strategy for the next 10 years, with the goal of bringing carbon emissions back to a peak in 2030 and fulfilling some of the commitments made when the 2015 Paris climate agreement was signed.
But with economic growth at a nearly 30-year low, the Chinese government has continued to approve new thermal power plants, raising concerns that China, the world's largest emitter of greenhouse gases, will renege.
