January 29 - for the first time outside China, a team of Australian scientists said Wednesday they have successfully replicated the new coronavirus in the laboratory, a breakthrough that could help fight the global spread of the new coronavirus.
Researchers at the Peter Doherty Institute for infection and immunology in Melbourne said they would share virus samples with the World Health Organization (who) and laboratories around the world.
The Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported that a laboratory in China had successfully isolated the virus, but only published the genome sequence, not the virus sample.
The Australian Institute said the virus samples they isolated will be used to generate antibody tests, which will be able to detect the virus in asymptomatic patients and contribute to vaccine development.
