Hafiz Mohammed naseerudin said he was lying on the road for almost an hour after a policeman beat him up as a Muslim and accused him of spreading the coronavirus.
Naseer Uddin, 44, picked up some vegetables at a friend's home in hunabad, in the southern Indian state of Karnataka, when he said an official had parked him on a motorcycle.
Naserudin said other vehicles were also in motion. He thought he was stopped for his religious beliefs.
"I'm imam, so I look and dress very Muslim," he said. I have a long beard, too. " "The police started beating me and said the disease was spreading because of me and my community."
