Japanese auto lobby groups on Thursday called on US President Trump to make "appropriate decisions" on trade regulations for imported cars, reiterating that Japanese cars do not pose a threat to US national security.
"Implementing import restrictions will not only impact our American customers, but also disrupt the operations of American automobile and component manufacturers and car dealers," said Akio Toyoda, president of the Japan Automobile Industry Association, in a statement.
"We look forward to President Trump's understanding and prudent and appropriate decision-making, which is of vital importance to the U.S. automotive industry and the American people."
The U.S. Department of Commerce submitted a report to President Trump on Sunday, which could lead to high tariffs on imported cars and auto parts in the United States, even before the announcement of its contents, which triggered strong opposition from the automotive industry.
