The United States-backed Syrian Democratic Force (SDF) handed over more than 150 Iraqi and other foreign Islamic fighters to Iraq on Thursday.
Two Iraqi military sources told Reuters that a total of 502 soldiers had been surrendered under an agreement, the first of several times.
"Most of the fighters are Iraqis," said a military colonel, whose troops are stationed on the Syrian border. "But we have some foreigners."
Ahmed al-Mahallawi, mayor of the Iraqi border town of Al-Qaim, said some of the fighters'families had also been transferred.
"This morning, 10 trucks carrying Daesh fighters and their families were handed over to the Iraqi army by Self-Defense Forces forces," he said, using the Arabic acronym Islamic initials.
"Most of them are Iraqis, and the convoy is protected to the greatest extent possible, going to Jazeera and Badiya military headquarters." Both bases are located in Anbar Province.
