Belgian pigeon named Armando has been auctioned for nearly $1.5 million, more than three times the world record, pigeon website said Monday.
"No one expected to sell at such a high price, no one thought," Jorge Ferrari, from the auction website Pigeon Paradise (www.pipa.be), told Reuters.
Chinese people's enthusiasm for pigeon long distance competition has greatly increased the price of pigeon racing, and because Belgium is the kingdom of pigeon racing, pigeon racing here is particularly popular. (reut.rs/2Ji22LF)
The highest bidding price for pigeons was 376,000 euros ($426,422) until the fierce competition that lasted all Sunday evening. And Armando, the record-breaking champion of the long-distance flight race owned by Joel Verschoot, was finally photographed by an anonymous Chinese buyer for 1.52 million ($1.42 million).
How can Chinese buyers recover their investments? First of all, the prize money for the Chinese pigeon flight race is as high as seven figures, and the average auction price for each of the seven descendants of Armando is 21,500 euros. The five-year-old Flemish male pigeon has several years to breed and may make a lot of money for its owner.
