Connecticut Attorney General William Tong said Monday that some states in the United States are investigating potential injustices and fraud related to hundreds of car fires by Hyundai Motor Co. (005380.KS) and Kia Motor Co. (000270.KS).
The two Korean automakers have carried out a series of car recalls since 2015, with more than 2.3 million vehicles recalled to deal with various engine fire risks. Reuters reported in November that federal prosecutors had launched criminal investigations into Hyundai and Kia cars to determine whether car recalls related to engine defects had been properly handled.
"We know that there have been a number of car fires in Connecticut, including some that are said to have been repaired during the recall process. This is a serious problem, and we are actively and responsibly taking action to expose the truth and ensure accountability, "Tang Weilin said in a statement.
Hyundai and Kia said they were cooperating with the investigation. Hyundai added that the company had improved "engine manufacturing" and was also contacting affected customers.
A spokesman for Connecticut's attorney general did not reveal how many states were involved in the investigation.
