Prosecutors said Thursday that U.S. authorities collected information about Huawei, a Chinese telecom equipment manufacturer, through secret surveillance, intending to use it to accuse the company of violating sanctions and bank fraud.
At a hearing in Brooklyn Federal Court, Assistant U.S. Attorney Alex Solomon said the evidence obtained under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) needed to be handled confidentially.
The U.S. government told the Chinese government in a court filing Thursday that it intends to use the information, saying it was "obtained or generated through electronic surveillance and on-site search", but gave no details.
The U.S. government has been pressing other countries not to let Huawei participate in their telecommunications networks, fearing that its equipment might be used by Chinese authorities for espionage. Huawei calls these doubts baseless.
