IRIB, Iran's official news agency, reported Monday that Iran would restart some of its previously suspended nuclear program in response to the withdrawal of the U.S. nuclear agreement with Iran in 2015.
IRIB reports quote a source close to the official committee responsible for the Iranian nuclear agreement as saying that President Hassan Rouhani will announce on May 8 that Iran will reduce some of its "secondary and general" commitments under the agreement.
May 8 marks the first anniversary of President Trump's announcement that the United States is withdrawing from the Iranian nuclear agreement. Trump subsequently imposed severe sanctions on Iran, including a clear statement to reduce oil exports to zero, the lifeblood of Iran's economy, so that the Iranian economy can not cook.
According to IRIB, the source said, "The Islamic Republic of Iran will react to the withdrawal of the United States from the nuclear agreement and the inability of European countries to fulfil their obligations and will restart some of the nuclear activities suspended under the framework of the nuclear agreement."
Similar reports were also made by the semi-official Iranian Student News Agency (ISNA), citing "informed sources" who said Iran would announce Wednesday that it would take "reciprocal action" against the withdrawal of the U.S. nuclear agreement.
According to the report, some EU leaders have been informally informed of Iran's decision.
