Senior U.S. trade officials said Monday that China has withdrawn its commitments in trade negotiations, prompting President Trump to threaten to raise tariffs on Chinese imports to the United States over the weekend, but Washington is willing to continue negotiations if China changes its position.
"In the past week or so, we have seen... China's commitment is shrinking, "U.S. Trade Representative Letterheiser told reporters. He said that China's change in some specific commitments could lead to substantial changes in the text of the agreement.
"In our view, this is unacceptable," he said.
A Chinese delegation will visit Washington on Thursday and Friday. Lethizer said he expected Chinese Vice Premier Liu He to participate in the negotiations.
In a briefing to reporters with Finance Minister Nuchin, Lethizer said Trump wanted to reach an agreement that included substantial structural changes, but the two sides had not yet reached an agreement on this.
