U.S. Treasury Secretary Nuchin Monday denied media reports that President Trump was considering dismissing Commerce Secretary Ross after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that a citizenship question could not be added to the census.
Trump Thursday abandoned adding a controversial citizenship issue to the 2020 census, but insisted that he would not abandon efforts to count the number of non-citizens in the United States and had asked government agencies to mine citizenship information from existing databases.
Although Trump had previously been unhappy with Ross, especially because of the setbacks in some trade negotiations, the 81-year-old commerce minister is still in office.
Since the end of last year, other media have reported at different times that Trump is considering replacing Ross. Frequent high-level turnover is one of the characteristics of Trump's government.
Nuchin told reporters that Trump was still satisfied with Rose's work. "I have every reason to think that Secretary Ross has done a good job," he said. I've never heard anything else.
In a statement Monday, the U.S. Department of Commerce said Ross was currently overseeing the Department's response to Hurricane Barry, noting that Ross traveled with Trump to Wisconsin and Ohio on Friday.
