On Thursday, the United States imposed sanctions on an international network of companies and their agents, calling them involved in procuring raw materials for Iran's nuclear program.
This is the first time that the United States has offered punitive measures since Iran announced earlier this month that it would raise enriched uranium to a level capable of producing nuclear bomb fuel.
"The Treasury is taking action to shut down a procurement network for Iran's nuclear program, which benefits the Iranian regime's evil ambitions by acquiring key nuclear materials through Chinese and Belgian camouflage companies," U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said in a statement.
"Iran can't buy and store centrifuge products while declaring goodwill on the world stage," Nuchin said.
The U.S. Treasury Department says these companies act as Iran's Iran Centrifuge Technology Company (TESA) procurement network. TESA plays a vital role in Iran's uranium enrichment program, and its centrifuges are used in facilities under the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran.
