U.S. and Chinese officials will call on Thursday

      In an interview on the sidelines of the Group of Seven (G7) meeting in Chantille, France, Nuchin said that he and U.S. Trade Representative Lethizer would talk by telephone with the leader of China's trade negotiations.
Since July 2018, the United States and China have been caught up in a tit-for-tat tariff war, and Washington has urged Beijing to address what it considers decades of unfair and illegal trade practices. China retorts that any agreement needs to be fair and equal, which clearly leaves the two sides far from reaching an agreement and ending the capricious situation. Such a situation has disrupted the global supply chain, causing a major shock in financial markets.
Nouchin told Reuters, "At present we are making a lead-person call. In a sense, it is necessary to arrange face-to-face meetings, and I expect we will do so."
Asked if Thursday's call would lead to face-to-face meetings, Nuchin said, "It's possible, but I'm not going to guess the result."
In addition, Sugar, the former Chinese ambassador to Iceland and former president of the Chinese Academy of International Studies, a think tank affiliated to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, said he expected more formal discussions to resume this month.
"It's going to happen at the end of the month," Sugar said in an interview in New York.
