Trump told French President Mark Long last week that he was concerned about France's proposed digital service tax.
"If someone levies taxes on them, it should be their homeland, the United States. We will soon announce reciprocal measures for Mark Long's foolish behaviour, "Trump tweeted on Friday." I've always said that American wine is better than French wine! "
Trump later told reporters in the Oval Office of the White House that France's decision to impose a digital tax was wrong and he threatened retaliation against major French exports.
"They shouldn't do that," Trump said. "I said to them,"Don't do that, or I'll tax your wines."
A few minutes later, Trump said the announcement would soon be made by the U.S. side. "It could be about wine or something else," he said.
The White House said Trump and Marklong spoke by telephone on Friday to discuss the tax and the Group of Seven (G7) summit to be held in Paris next month.
The office said that the president "stressed that the G7 Summit will be an important opportunity to promote a universal tax on digital activities, which is in our common interest and we need to work hard to get the international community to agree on it."
