British Prime Minister Johnson intends to lead Britain out of the EU with or without an exit agreement, so he is bound to be in conflict with Parliament this week. The outcome of the showdown could lead to delays in Britain's withdrawal from Europe and the collapse of the government.
As a result, the possibility of holding parliamentary elections in advance in Britain has increased. Britain should have held its next general election in 2022.
If one of the following two situations occurs, Britain will advance the general election:
1. Johnson proposed holding an election.
If Johnson believes that Parliament is determined to prevent him from leading Britain out of Europe on October 31, he may try to hold general elections and seek a majority in the elections so that his plan can be passed in Parliament.
He needs to submit proposals for an early general election to Parliament for a vote and win two-thirds of the 650 seats.
The opposition Labour Party has been calling for elections, so there should be enough votes to support early elections, but former Labour Prime Minister Tony Blair has warned that the elections will be an "elephant trap" for Labour and should be avoided.
If the proposal is passed by Parliament, the general election may take place from mid-October to the end of the month, in time for the deadline for Britain's withdrawal from Europe.
According to the law, there must be a 25-day interval between the day of formal submission and the day of voting, and general elections are usually held on Thursday. Therefore, if the relevant steps can be completed before the end of September 12, the election date may fall on October 17.
2. Non-confidence vote
The opposition Labour Party can initiate a vote of no confidence in the government.
If the majority of parliamentarians support a no-confidence vote, they will either form an alternative government within 14 days, control the regime without holding general elections, or win back the regime by the original government. If neither the alternative government nor the present one can win a vote of confidence during this period, then general elections will be held.
If the government wants to hold general elections after losing the no-confidence vote, there will be a legal limit of the shortest interval, but there is no provision for the longest interval.
