After the attack, Trump also authorized the use of strategic U.S. oil reserves to ensure stable supply. The incident reduced global production by 5%.
"There is reason to believe that we know who did it, that we have loaded our ammunition and are waiting for verification results, but we are also waiting to hear from Saudi Arabia about who they think launched the attack and what conditions we will follow up on," Trump said on Twitter.
Earlier in the day, a senior U.S. official told Reuters that evidence of the attack showed that Iran was behind the scenes rather than Yemeni Hussein militants who claimed responsibility for the incident.
U.S. Secretary of State Pompeo also said there was no evidence that the attack came from Yemen. The joint forces led by Saudi Arabia have fought with Hussein forces in Yemen for more than four years, and the conflict is widely seen as a proxy war between Saudi Arabia and Iran, a Shiite Muslim country.
"In the midst of calls for a downgrade, Iran has launched an unprecedented attack on global energy supplies," he said.
Abbas Mousavi, spokesman for Iran's foreign ministry, dismissed the U.S. accusation, saying it was "meaningless" for the U.S. to hold Iran accountable. A senior commander of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard has warned that Iran is ready for a "full-scale" war.
"All US bases and their carriers within 2,000 kilometers of Iran are within our missile range," the semi-official Tasnim news agency quoted Amirali Hajizadeh, commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, as saying.
The U.S. and Iraqi governments have been in high tension because of long-standing disputes over Iran's nuclear program, which led to the imposition of comprehensive U.S. sanctions on Iran.
Oil prices jumped more than 15% at Sunday's opening, amid concerns about global supply and escalating tensions in the Middle East. Saudi National Petroleum Corp. Saudi Amy said the attack on Saturday resulted in a 5.7 million barrel/day reduction in production.
The U.S. official, who asked for anonymity, said 19 hit points at the Saudi oil facility and there was evidence that the launch area was west-northwest of the target, not from Yemen, south of the target.
