China has been sensitive to the US seeking to sever, or at least try to rein in, economic relations. Beijing is wary of the trump administration's desire to break up completely with China.
At present, China and the United States are trying to find a solution to their trade disputes. The United States announced that it has reached a "first stage" agreement with China on trade issues and suspended the original plan to impose tariffs in October.
In a speech at a high-level Chinese military forum in Beijing, Chad sbragia, the Deputy Assistant Secretary of defense, tried to express a more positive view on the relationship between the two countries.
"One of the things I want to comment on and challenge is -- I've heard it in this group and in other groups -- is that the U.S. approach is based on a separation." Mr. sbragia said at the Xiangshan forum.
"I tell you from my personal experience that it's not just the official policy of the United States, it's not even the policy discussion I hear in my daily business. That's not even our idea. " He said.
"If it's practical to go your separate ways, what you see every day will be very different from what you see now."
