The U.S. Department of justice and six security agencies said there was no sign of foreign government interference in Tuesday's state and local elections.
But U.S. rivals such as Russia, China and Iran will seek to intervene in future U.S. elections, including by manipulating social media and cyber attacks, the agency said.
"While we have no evidence at this time that the electoral infrastructure has been damaged or destroyed to enable the opponent countries to prevent elections, change the number of votes or disrupt the counting capacity, we must be alert to the threat to the United States elections," said the joint statement signed by the heads of these institutions.
The agencies have stepped up efforts to protect the elections and created a new position in the office of the director of national intelligence dedicated to electoral security in the United States.
An assessment by US intelligence agencies in January 2017 found that Russia intervened in the 2016 US presidential election with the goal of helping trump win.
National security experts have said they believe foreign governments will once again aim to influence American voters in the 2020 presidential election.
