Malaysia's foreign minister on Thursday quoted us secretary of state Mike Pompeo as saying the US was considering hosting the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in January.
The APEC summit, which was scheduled to be held in Chile from November 16 to 17, was cancelled because of serious domestic protests. Malaysia is the host country of the next APEC summit scheduled to be held at the end of 2020.
"When I was in Bangkok, Secretary of state pompeio called me to ask Malaysia's position, because Chile was unable to host the APEC summit in November this year, and the United States is considering finding a place to host the APEC summit in China sometime in January," Saifuddin Abdullah, Malaysia's foreign minister, told reporters.
"But I've told American officials in Bangkok that we don't think it's a good idea."
He did not elaborate.
Abdullah attended the East Asia Summit in Bangkok earlier this month, as well as a meeting of us and Southeast Asian leaders. U.S. Commerce Secretary rose is the highest ranking official on the U.S. delegation.
