Federal prosecutors have charged a New York company with criminal charges for illegally importing and selling surveillance security equipment from China, exposing U.S. government and private customers to security risks.
The company charged is Aventura technologies, based in COMAC, New York, and seven of its current and former employees, six of whom have been arrested on the charge of Jack cabasso. The defendant appeared publicly Thursday in federal court in Brooklyn, New York.
After cabasso's brief appearance in court, the judge ordered him to be imprisoned without bail, while the other five were released. Lawyers for Aventura and cabasso are not immediately available for comment.
Prosecutors said the defendant falsely claimed that Aventura products were made in the United States, but they were mainly imports from China, and the time involved was from 2006 to this month. Some products even have known network security risks.
Prosecutors say the company's biggest customers are U.S. government agencies, including the U.S. Army, navy and air force, as well as some private enterprises. Since 2010, sales have totaled about $88 million.
