South Korea's foreign ministry said talks with U.S. officials about sharing the cost of U.S. troops in South Korea broke down on Tuesday. The United States asked South Korea to share 5 billion US dollars, which caused public outrage in South Korea.
In the 66 year alliance relationship between the United States and South Korea, the breakdown of this negotiation is a rare public standoff between the two sides, accusing each other of having no intention of reaching a fair and reasonable military expenditure sharing compromise agreement.
"Our position is that this should be in line with the framework of the special agreement on defense cost sharing (SMA) agreed by the United States and South Korea in the past 28 years," said the South Korean Foreign Ministry.
"The United States believes that the share of defense spending should be significantly increased through the establishment of new projects," the foreign ministry statement said.
