An earthquake struck northern Florence on Monday morning, causing trains across the country to be cancelled or severely delayed, including on the national high-speed rail line.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake occurred at 3:30 a.m. (0230gmt) local time in the Apennine mountains in central Italy, with a magnitude of 4.8. The fire brigade said there were no casualties reported.
Rete ferroviaria Italiana, a unit of the state-run railway company that runs the national railway network, said in a statement: "as a precaution, it has been stopped to check the condition of the infrastructure."
If the magnitude is above 4, the company must check the lines in the area.
