Democrats in the US House of Representatives on Thursday urged the Senate to call his senior deputy to testify in the trial of Trump's impeachment, seeking to focus on Trump's trial before the 2020 presidential election.
The house of Representatives voted Wednesday to impeach President trump for abusing his power and impeding congressional investigations. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Thursday that she would not formally refer the impeachment to the Senate until she learned how Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell would handle the trial.
"We will not formally submit it until we see what they are going to do," she said at a press conference.
According to senior Democratic aides, the Democrats want McConnell to have senior trump aides such as White House budget director and acting chief of staff Mike Mulvaney and former national security adviser John Bolton testify.
"Is the president so weak that no one of his people can defend him after taking an oath?" Said Chuck Schumer, democratic leader of the US Senate.
In Wednesday's historic vote, the Democratic led House voted to impeach trump, accusing him of abusing power and obstructing congressional investigations into his pressure on Ukraine to investigate democratic political rival Biden. Trump became the third impeached president in American history.
The Senate trial is expected in early January. Trump has said he wants a longer trial with witnesses, but senior Republican senators want a quick trial to turn the page. They cited Clinton's impeachment in 1999 as saying no witnesses were present.
