Production of the best-selling 737 Max jet will be suspended in January, and the company will reassign 3000 workers to other positions. Boeing 737 Max is currently grounded.
Boeing's announcement follows a settlement between two other airlines, the American Airlines Group (AAL. O) and Mexico's Aeromexico (aeromex. MX), which said it had reached a settlement with Boeing over the damage caused by the 737 Max's grounding.
Neither of the airlines has released compensation. Several airlines have reached a confidential settlement with Boeing in recent weeks. Boeing said it would not comment on discussions with airlines.
In an email to employees, Boeing said about 3000 employees, most of them manufacturing, engineering and organization departments, would be reassigned to other positions. Most of them are employees at Boeing's Renton, Washington, 737 Max plant; others are in Boeing's South Carolina operations.
Some employees will be reassigned to the 767 and 777 / 777x production lines in Everett, Washington. Boeing has said it does not intend to lay off or lay off any employees for the shutdown.
